Welcome back, and a happy 2009 (we hope)

What with the abnormally cold weather, high fuel prices, virulent cold and widespread layoffs amid an economic downturn, the only sensible way to get through the rest of winter is to wrap up in heavy clothes and plonk yourself in front of a nice warming games console and LCD TV until it’s all over, which admittedly may be 2077 when the bombs fall and we all turn into super mutants.

That might just explain why UK game sales are at a record high, up twenty-three per cent since the year before last. As you may be able to guess, we’ve been doing just that, but aside from losing our grip with reality just a little bit more it means we can also now bring you our very own highlights of 2008.

Here’s the schedule:

Best offline multiplayer (5 nominations)
Best online co-operative multiplayer (5 nominations)
Best online competitive multiplayer (5 nominations)
Best atmosphere/immersion (5 nominations)
Best story/writing (5 nominations)
Best audiovisual experience (5 nominations)
Best open world experience (5 nominations)
Game of the Year 2008 (5 nominations)

Guitar Hero Metallica revealed in new trailer

If you just can’t get enough Metallica and even the new Death Magnetic album release on Guitar Hero III and Guitar Hero World Tour wasn’t enough to sate your appetite, then you’ll definitely be interested in GH Metallica, which takes an extensive trip through the band’s discography and also features a few guest bands like Judas Priest and Alice in Chains.

As with World Tour, the new game will support vocals and drums as well as lead and bass guitar, making it a much more viable sounding product than GH Aerosmith was. But why are we telling you this? To pique your interest in the new reveal trailer, of course!

More screens, Gromit?

How very festive: Telltale Games, developer of the recent Sam & Max and Strong Bad adventures, have just released the first screens from Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Adventures. It’ll be out for PC and Wii some time next year and – you guessed it – it’s a point and click adventure.

Review round-up: Sonic Unleashed (X360, Wii)

Sonic Unleashed is a pretty ballsy name, equivalent to Sega saying “okay, we know some of the recent Sonic games have been a bit tame, but check out this!”. Now imagine that ‘this’ is badly drawn sketch of Sonic with extra fur. Going by Metacritic rankings, Unleashed is yet another vague disappointment for fans, with an average score of 63% on Xbox 360 and 70% on Wii.

Harshest of all the critics is the rather disappointed sounding EuroGamer, awarding 4/10 on Xbox 360 (“Sonic Unleashed is an obviously poor effort from a series that is still hopelessly lost in the modern gaming landscape.”) and a slightly more generous 6/10 on Wii (“...simply a more satisfying rendition of the same thing.”).

The pattern of separate scores is repeated with IGN (4.5/10 for Xbox 360 and 7.2/10 for Wii) and to a certain extent Game Informer (6.0/10 and 6.5/10), although bucking the trend in every possible way is the US Hardcore Gamer Magazine, awarding 9/10 on Xbox 360 and 8/10 on Wii and calling it “a glorious return to true console form for Sonic.”

Clearly few people agree, and despite a warm-ish review or two, particularly on the Wii, such as the UK Official Nintendo Magazine’s 79% (“Sonic Unleashed is both one of the best Sonic games we’ve ever played and one of the dullest.”) and Nintendo Power’s 80%, most of the ratings have been much lower. The clear message, however, is if you insist on buying it, avoid the Xbox and go for the Wii.
